Gulf Consult was appointed by M.A. Kharafi & Sons to provide design & supervision for this turn-key project for MPW. Gulf Consult engaged Montgomery Watson Harza (MWH) to assist as a sub consultant for the specialist design and construction management of the sanitary components: sewers, pumps and related facilities.

The project involved the elimination of a series of 30 sewage pump stations in the area bounded by 4th Ring Road and the Gulf, and replacement by a single 40 m deep pump station at Riggae. The new pump station handles 778,000 m3 per day, with facilities for grit removal, odour control, instrumentation and telemetry. In conjunction with the new pump station, a new interceptor sewer of diameter up to 2,250 mm has been constructed to collect sewage from the redundant pump stations.

The interceptor has been constructed using micro-tunneling at depths of up to 35 m with 40 km of such tunnels. Vortex-type manholes have been installed at pipe junctions at different levels.
